Our Roots
The name Ferreira Costa – Port Wine Family, symbolizes the past, the present and the future of this family with an umbilical connection to the production and marketing of Port Wines, as well as to the culture of the vineyard, in the Douro Demarcated Region recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Humanity.
The past in the person of José Augusto Costa Júnior (3rd generation), father of Maria José Ferreira Costa, and a great driver of the inheritance of his parents and grandparents (Miguel António Costa, great-grandfather of the current owner, in the mid-19th century, produced and sold Port Wine in Cedovim, Vila Nova de Foz Côa), becoming the largest port wine merchant in the Douro Demarcated Region. He produced, transformed and marketed millions of barrels of Port wine, multiplying the entire legacy that was transmitted to him. His vision allowed him to store and age a significant amount of port wine, partially used in our tawnies.
The present in the name of Maria Fernanda André Ferreira (mother of Maria José) and Maria José Ferreira Costa (4th generation). Maria Fernanda embraced this activity from an early age with all the passion and strength that is due and justly recognized. Its presence boosted wine-growing activity, its vision multiplied the vineyard area (for the current 160 ha) and led it in a constant search for the modernization of the winery and an increase in the winemaking capacity. Today, thanks to Maria Fernanda, we have transformed about 2 million kg of grapes into 1.5 million liters of Port wine and wines with a Douro designation of origin. Maria José, graduated in law, soon realized that this was not the way. The road was to roll up your sleeves and follow your parents' example, having become a winegrower in the late 1990s.
The future in the name of Maria João Ferreira Costa and Valente Rocha (22 years old), Bernardo José Ferreira Costa and Valente Rocha (16 years old) and Carolina Ferreira Costa Oliveira da Silva (9 years old), the 5th generation, in whom we placed all confidence and the certainty that this immense legacy is in good hands.
